Armored Pyjamas

Anyways, to the OP, I'd say that if you want to hit them with their armor off, like in the middle of the night or in early morning, simply tell them that they don't have time to put their armor on. It's as easy as that. If your players ask why, tell them that it'd take too long. You don't need some rule making up numbers for you to show your players- you know your group, make something up that suits all of you.

Although there is in fact a rule about putting on armour. PHB, page 212:

"Putting on a suit of armour always takes at least 5 minutes, which means that it’s an activity you can undertake only outside combat"

Warning: Personal anecdotes ahead.

I'm fully capable of sleeping in my 40 lb ballistic armor. Amazing what you can do when you are totally exhausted. And medieval armor was better distributed, with less weight focused on the shoulders. Even before joining the army, I'd been known to crash wearing my stiff motorcycle leathers (sans helmet and boots). I hardly have the best endurance in the world, either, so I must be really high level or sleeping in armor is easier than many people think.

You see I thought this post was going to point out the silliness involved in it taking you 5 minutes to put on cloth armor, leather armor, chain armor, plate armor.

but I was wrong :)

The '4e style' approach would probably not give a penalty for sleeping in armour, but rather give a bonus for not sleeping in armour - i.e. a positive incentive for taking a kip sans the metal gear.

I don't; however if the players turn up not having brushed their teeth they get penalties on every roll!
;)

Yes. They get a bonus for intimidate for being completely soaked in blood too. Thats role-playing and putting yourself in your character's situation, which is why you won't find any rules for it.

If your players show up for a game completely soaked in blood, you'd better give them a band-aid and a ride to the hospital, not a skill bonus.;)

Two issues here:

Its completely unrealistic to take 5 minutes to do armor.

The authors did not want to bother with this, and made a prohibitive rule. This, in turn, means no-one ever takes of their armor in a dangerous situation - which is perfectly plausible.

Sleeping in medieval armor is not that hard, I've personally done it when on live.
