Armoring a Mount

alright, so I want to armor a griffin or dire eagle and am unsure how to price it out... I've done this thread before about a year ago but i can no longer find it.

cost for a creature of that type is x4 and weight is x2 and I wanted a mithral breastplate for it.
normally that would be 200gp. Now do I add the x4 to the base cost or the final cost after mithral is added? Magically they are priced the same so that is unimportant.

It is a difference of 4800gp one way or 16800gp another way. That is rather substantial and NOT worth an extra 1 AC of a breastplate on my mount vs chain barding.

You multiply the cost of the mithral as well. So a mithral breastplate for a medium creatures is 4200 gp, and so as barding for a mount that would be 16800 gp (x4) for a large creature. Chain barding is definitely the way to go. Make sure the mount is proficient with the armor, though.

Have you seen "Rules Supplement 1: Mounted Combat" by Dream Machine Productions?

Its a comprehensive compilation and expansion* of the mounted combat rules.

The section on barding mentions that aerial mounts cannot fly with a medium or heavy load...which wearing medium armor puts them into. So you need to stick with partial chain barding, which is light, or pay for the mithral for the breastplate.

The book lists partial chain as:
Cost: 400gp
AC: +4
Max Dex: +4
Armor Check Penalty: -2
Weight: 50 lbs

{* the majority is simply OGL/SRD material compiled into one freindly book. The authors added mechanics to fill in the niches, like how to ride a burrowing animal, training warpacks, and more skill tricks.}
