Armour hardness values

This may have been posted but I've not really been able to view all threads :)

Anyway I was wondering if anyone has used hardness for armour and how it effected the game. I find that armour is only ever lost if you're asleep out of armour and run away or you just get shot of it and buy some new stuff.

What sort of damage would it take to destroy each piece of armour, what are the toughness values, can magic armour be destroyed the sameway??

The real problem is that DnD doesn't have piecemeal armor. If you're wearing full plate, and your helm is destroyed, what happens to your AC?

IMC armor can be destroyed or damaged by certain special attacks. There's a magic rapier called "Strapcutter" that causes the target to lose one point of AC that comes from shields and worn armor every time it rolls a 1 for damage - and in the process, does no damage. If the target has no worn armor, then it starts cutting things like belts, laces, and backpack straps.

Some monsters have the ability to destroy armour (Bebilith?) although I don't recall them being given a decent rationalisation for it.
