Artificers and making scrolls

Just checking to see if this sounds right. An Artificer in my Eberron campaign want to create a scroll -- Cure Light Wounds. He has to make a UMD check (21) to emulate the clerics caster ability and send time/XP/GP to create the scroll. The scroll (per the new errata) is not divine/arcane, but an "Artificer" scroll.

Now he wants to use the scroll. Does he have to make yet another UMD (dc 21) check to use the scroll?

(Part 3... I gathered from another thread that if this use check fails the scroll is still intact, yes?)

Thanks,

Brian

Since he can make scrolls, he gains a +2 bonus to activate them. Also remember that Decipher Script, Spellcraft & Knowledge (arcana) grant synergy bonuses to decipher and activate scrolls. But you don't need to decipher scrolls you create.

You'll also have to make a UMD check to emulate a high ability score (Wis for cleric spells) if you don't already have it. For CLW, you only need Wis 11, though.

Oh, and I almost forgot the AOO and arcane spell failure checks...

The not divine/not arcane thing throws me--does this mean that other spellcasters can't use an artificer's scrolls?

Correct on all counts. Note, however, that an Artificer can also help another character act as a creator, sidestepping the UMD rolls and producing an arcane / divine scroll.

Ok, quick off topic question, why play errebon when you can play D&D

Boy, you sure are witty, aren't you? Gawsh.

The spells are Artificer and the casting stat for Artificers is Int. No need to emulate wisdom or charisma (emulating high Int might be necessary).

As above the spells are Artificer - no ASF.

Correct. They can only be used via UMD (this includes Artificers).

Keith Baker has suggested a house rule treating Artificer scrolls as usuable to Arcane or Divine casters as appropriate to the caster (but not for scribing into spell books).

Wow, that just made my rogue/artificer's day! I had just about quit making scrolls since I had to make so many rolls with so many chances of failure.

Though we had gotten hip to the "have another spellcaster help" tactic. With a sorcerer, druid and cleric as the other party members, I wasn't making many UMD checks to create items.
