D&D 5E As the sun dies…

I am yet to read much about the nitty gritty of D&D 2024.

That is to say I looked at the art and watched preview videos but have not followed along with the nitty gritty class changes.

In this time of transition for many I am in a weird spot. It seems I keep stumbling on new character ideas to try whether single or multi classed within the current rules.

Some talk about being bored and ready for the new but I am not organically there yet.

This makes me wonder if this is a function of some folks playing more characters than I have or? Anyone else feel like they have not exhausted things?

I have never in my life felt I have exhausted things before an edition change. I am excited for this one though because there are classes I would now be interested in playing (sorcerer and monk) that I would not have considered before in this edition.

Edit: I would be also interested in having another go at the fighter: Eldritch Knight.

I had more 2014 characters to go still, but I am really looking forward to some fixes that are welcome. Some underpowered and overpowered spells are being brought into line, the melee fighting classes are being boosted to compete with the spellcasters, this is all stuff I've always wanted for 5e.

I am a forever DM. Since 2014 I've probably had 6 or 7 characters and most of the games they were in died before they hit level 6.

So. Y'know. I've got plenty of 5e to explore, yet. Part of why I'm so happy to continue working on A5e going forward.

As an optimizer, I have gone though the majority of 2014 combinations and builds over the past 10 years, even if I only played a fraction of them. So I am ready to search for new combinations and do more maths.

Also, I don't have any compulsion to "gotta play them all". Even though i went though all the D&D builds, I probably only analyzed 1/4 of the Pathfinder 2 ones. And there are plenty of other systems i haven't even touched. Like all of 2e.

So there is already too much for me to play with. And I can't see a downside to having even more toys from my favorite toy maker.

Also, there is no need to rush to switch. Nothing wrong with waiting till your campaign ends before you buy the new book.

I've played most classes, but I'm currently playing my first sorcerer in 5e, and gazing a little jealously at the new and improved version. There are still classes I've only played for a few levels, and plenty of subclasses I've never tried.

I’ve played very little of 5e in the grand scheme of my gaming life. And I tend to try to stick to either Fighter, Rogue or Cleric.

…I’m boring…

Deinitely ... moreso 3 months ago when I started what will probably be my last 3 5E campaigns as a player.

However as I got more involved in 2024 I came up with a bunch of new things I want to try ....... Dance Bard I am thinking of you!

As 5E sunsets I have played every class except Barbarian and Druid and a ton of multiclass combos.

Playing Druid in Curse of Strahd was great fun. Burning down werewolves and vampires with Moonbeam while simultaneously tanking as a bear surprisingly doesn't get old.

For me, I never really enjoy 2014 classes as much as I thought I would. At times, the design felt a little too conservative for my tastes, and the aesthetics didn't line up with some of the mechanics. Despite 5R's likewise conservative changes, there ARE changes, and I personally feel the 5R classes are far better than the 5E classes. Monk, Sorcerer, and even Ranger (albeit not as much as we'd like) are all far more satisfying. Barbarians have more things to do now, and melee attacks offer a lot more design space to build on with weapon masteries. Overall, 5R feels like a smoother, more enjoyable heroic fantasy game to me then 5E, which makes me even MORE bored with 5E.
