D&D 3E/3.5 Assassin in 3.5: How did I miss this?

I don't have the DMG in front of me, but I was just browsing the Assassin prestige class in the SRD, and it appears that they now get the shadowdancer's hide in plain sight ability. True, they get it at 8th level (minimum character level 13th) vs. 1st level for the shadow dancer (minimum character level 8th), but still, I'm stunned I never heard this mentioned on the boards.

It's true that the Assassin was given Hide in Plain Sight once 3.5 came out (as did the Ranger). I guess it hasn't been discussed much because... well... it's not exactly hidden, is it? Plus it's been that way for a while.

How did you miss it? It was clearly hiding in plain sight.

(Also, the Assassin PrC simply isn't used that heavily. Most people don't run evil games, so it isn't that suitable for PCs, and for NPCs it just usually isn't that fun to murder PCs with no warning.)

Hey, I let the PC's make a spot check. That's all the warning they should need...

I say listen at -10. Of course i prefer "assasins" to be any character with a hint of stealth who attacks while thier victim sleeps.

Potion of invisibilty: 250GP
Skill focus: move silently: free
rusty orcish great axe: free to 20 GP

PC Beheaded by shlub while his friend is on watch: priceless

Somethings GP can buy, For Everything else, there is Rat-Bastard-DM Card :]

Assassins are a really neat class in 3e, probably one of the more powerful prestige classes for evil NPCs and PCs. They gain the extra sneak attack a level early, have death attack, hid in plain sight, cool spells (although you might want to fiddle with Wraithstrike), Use Magic Device as a class skill, poison use, etc. Very good class - I played one once in a campaign for evil characters, and it was a blast.

It's even cooler when you give the class to a monster or outsider. In Spectre of Sorrows, the second of the Age of Mortals campaign modules for Dragonlance, I included a night hag assassin as a major villain. Mean and scary!

I concur. I'm a fan of the Babau Blackguard/Assassin setup, personally.

Sneak Attack + Divine Sacrifice + Divine Might + Wraithstrike + Power Attack = Fun (for me).

Very nice! That's gotta hurt. I take it the babua sneak attack and class based sneak attack stack? Given that Wraithstrike is a swift action, it only takes one round to setup to cast Divine Sacrifice. What's the best class levels to have in Blackguard and Assassin for this? Now if you could use it to force the sneak attack such as Bluffing or similar, or with two-weapon fighting and flanking. Ouch!

The Death Attack isn't htat useful, though. How often in combat are you going to take 3 rounds out to then try to make a special attack that might not even hit? I mean yeah, it's cool and all for role-playing... but not really that useful in a game. I'd rather have and extra d6 to Sneak Attack damage.
