Assassins, just what does death strike kill?

First Post
Not having access to books makes planning this weeks adventure difficult to say the least. To further complicate things our campaigning heroes have gained the attention and ire of an Assassin. The Assassin has it out for the party Paladin and wishes to kill everybody around him, including his prized mount. So this brings into question, just what can an Assassin assassinate? What creature types are immune to assassination? granted is oozes, constructs, undead and any other being immune to critical hits. BUUT what about the different creature types? apparitions, monstrous humanoids, magical beasts etc.? I am aware of the “given they have a discernable anatomy” rule.

Thanks again...

If he can make a sneak attack against it, he can death attack it. Monstrous Humanoids and Magical Beasts would be subject to it, while apparition would not be.

Illithid (Mind Flayers) are apparations and as such they are immune to SA thus immune to Death Attack? I would argue against that, some apparations may have foregin anatomys and therefor require a lore or skill ck roll from the rogue or would be assassin, some, like the MF'r, do not(IMO) unless it states somewhere that aprts are immune to such attacks and I have failed to read it?

outsiders? giants? dragons? anything else? Fey?

A rogue can sneak attack only living creatures with discernible anatomies—undead, constructs, oozes, plants, and incorporeal creatures lack vital areas to attack. Any creature that is immune to critical hits is not vulnerable to sneak attacks. The rogue must be able to see the target well enough to pick out a vital spot and must be able to reach such a spot. A rogue cannot sneak attack while striking a creature with concealment or striking the limbs of a creature whose vitals are beyond reach.

Aberration Type

An aberration has a bizarre anatomy, strange abilities, an alien mindset, or any combination of the three.
Features

An aberration has the following features.

  • 8-sided Hit Dice.
  • Base attack bonus equal to ¾ total Hit Dice (as cleric).
  • Good Will saves.
  • Skill points equal to (2 + Int modifier, minimum 1) per Hit Die, with quadruple skill points for the first Hit Die.
Traits

An aberration possesses the following traits (unless otherwise noted in a creature’s entry).

  • Darkvision out to 60 feet.
  • Proficient with its natural weapons. If generally humanoid in form, proficient with all simple weapons and any weapon it is described as using.
  • Proficient with whatever type of armor (light, medium, or heavy) it is described as wearing, as well as all lighter types. Aberrations not indicated as wearing armor are not proficient with armor. Aberrations are proficient with shields if they are proficient with any form of armor.
  • Aberrations eat, sleep, and breathe.
An aberration is not immune to sneak attack simply by virtue of being an aberration.
