Assess: "Studied Spontaneity"

I would make some minor changes to Studied Sponteneaity....

Make the spell slot be designated when the feat is taken, not able to be changed, and one level lower than the highest level spell he can cast.

I'd do something with a self-balancing bit kind of like this:

Studied Spontaneity
PreReq: Able to prepare Arcane spells
Once (Twice? More?) per day when casting a spell you may expend an unprepared empty spell slot of the same level or higher to retain preperation of the spell you just cast.
Special: You may take this feat more than once.

Giving wizards spontaneous access to any spell in their spellbook is just too good.

I think the spell master pre req makes it all right. Spontaneous casting of a few spells for 2 feats seems fairly even.

Consider this mechanic:

When preparing spells for the day, you may give up a spell-slot at each spell-level. This allows you to designate one spell per spell-level as your "spontaneous" spell. You may convert prepared spells of the same level into your "spontaneous" spell. (If you give up your Specialist spell-slots, you may only designate spells of your Specialtiy school as "spontaneous".)

This hits the Wizard where it hurts: number of spells per day. The Sorcerer can still feel happy that he's got a significant advantage.

Or, is you want to spontaneous cast as a Wizard, you can invest the time to become a Magelord, out of The Lost Empires of Faerun. If you devote yourself to that class, and take Spell Mastery alot, after some time you could probably whip a sorceror.....

I like Pyrex's proposal, you can that way only spontaneously cast a spell you've already prepared. That way, it gives you some leeway -- "will I need more magic missiles or more mage armors? I'll just prepare one of both and leave my other first-level slots to cast them depending on my needs..." -- but doesn't give you a huge diversity to chose from.

I like it with the spell mastery requirement. It would read something like this:

Studied Spontaneity [General]
Pre-reqs: Spell Mastery
Benefit: You can "prepare" one spell slot in a special manner. When you use this spell slot you can cast any spell for which you have mastery spontaneously. Only spells with a casting time of 1 standard action, 1 free action, 1 immediate action, or 1 swift action can be cast spontaneously but no matter the original casting time, the spell requires a full round action to cast [not to be confused with casting time of 1 round].
Special: A character may gain this feat multiple times: each time it allows an additional spell slot to be prepared as a spontaneous slot.

I like this version. It lengthens the spell casting time, which hurts and means you can't use metamagic, and, since it's limited to only spells you have mastered through Spell Mastery, it costs you a feat (which is huge in my oppinion) for Spell Mastery AND a Feat for the ability, and you're not talking about 1 spell per level, but only a handfull of spells that were selected when the Spell Mastery Feat was selected. You want more spells? You need to select it again. And you still have to swap out the same level spell for it, and get only 1 casting like this per day.

So, a 6th level wizard can know let's say 4 spells he mastered at 3rd level, (So max of 2nd level mastered), and cast any of those 4 once total spontaniously for an extended casting time, and it does still use one of his prepared spells. I don't see this being unbalanced, since you had to use 2 feats, and you can only do it once.
