Assistance required: Computer History

Hello!

I'm entrenched in an intense school project revolving around the TimeLine of Computers. I was wondering if any extremely intelligent person out there has statistics pertaining to how many computers existed in every decade of the 20th century. I've tried Google but to no avail. I'm pretty sure the first computer was in 1937, so that's at least ONE for the 30's and probably ZERO for the 20's and before. But what about the other decades? We've got stats on 1984-2000, but we're really foggy on the rest of the 80's, all of the 70's, the 60's, 50's, and 40's. HELP! :heh:

If anyone knows the answer(s) and would like to post it or point me to a website, I'd be very appreciative!

I can't help with your request, but I do have a question - what's your definition of "computer"? For instance, do you include programmable calculators? If so, we had those in the 70's (when I was in high school), when real computers filled whole rooms. Do you include computer chips embedded in other devices, such as cars? Just curious how broadly you're defining things...

Good question! I think a certain degree of self-automation is required. Pascal invented an adding machine in 1642, but a human had to turn the dials/pull the levers in order to get the calculations. Hence, this was not a computer.

In the 1820's and 1830's, Charles Babbage designed machines which would add/subtract/multiply/divide and were to be STEAM-POWERED......sadly, he never built the things, so they weren't the first computers either.

Apparently, the first computer was 1937's Atanasoff-Berry-Computer, or "ABC" for short. My book tells me it was digital.

During WWII, a secret German-code-breaking computer was invented by the British. Interestingly, it was kept a secret until the 70's! It was called "Colossus" and probably was first put into use in 1943.
 

If you haven't already, check out some almanacs. The Information Please Almanac website has a page for the top 15 countries by number of computers in use in 2000 and 2001. It's possible some of the older almanacs at a local library may have some numbers for you. Good luck!

While there were certainly other companies in the industry, IBM pretty much dominated things until the mid-1980s.

IBM leaves out a few possible notes, like Turing's codebreaking machine. Check out The Code Book by Simon Singh. It gives a good description of Turing's machine and its Polish predecessors. Both should qualify as computers, although of fairly specific application. (And Singh's book is a good read cover to cover as well.)
