Atropol Encounters

Has anyone played in an encounter with an Atropol from the Epic Level Handbook?

That thing's a death machine!

Did you somehow manage to defeat this undead level-draining magic-dispelling spell-resistant damage-resistant regenerating horror and its multitudinous mulching minions? How? What was the composition and level of your party?

What does it take to re-kill this thing!?

Yep... it was probably the hardest battle in a campaign that lasted two and a half years. Anyway, the party was 23rd level at the time and barely won out. I believe two party members died in the battle. I don't remember specifics of the battle, but it was incredibly nasty.

Heh. I ran an encounter with one.

The PCs weren't meant to win.

It was a groundhog day type situation. The PCs were stuck in a prison demiplane with the Atropal that was design to contain it. The demiplane was stuck in a perpetual time loop.

The setup was that if anyone died before the time loop reset, they lost all memory of the events since they arrived in the plane. The consequence of this was that if the party ever all died, they would be doomed to repeat the TPK forever, since they could not change their actions to correct it.

The epic group I play with encountered the Atropol which was fathered by Hades on Persephone after he kidnapped her way back when. It had been taken by P's mother, Demeter, before it was born (Hades had no knowledge of this child), and entombed in secret by her.

After we opened its crypt and discovered the Atropol, our party (all around 30th level, if I remember correctly) didn't so much battle the abomination as simply try to stuff it back inside and seal it back up.

The character that I was playing took notice of all the depressing murals on the wall depicting the creature's history, and so jaunted off to the Gray Wastes to offer Hades a congradulatory cigar. We made off like bandits from the knowledge we gave the old god of death and wealth, and later heard of Zeus throwing down Demeter for her hideous crime.

The party was 28th level, and overpowered it with sheer force. They were able to overcome it's SR (Greater Spell Penetration and 28th level already), better than 50/50 with spells. DR 15 is really kind of a joke. The biggest thing it had going for it was immunity to criticals...no dual-wielding sneak attacks. 51 AC is pretty good, but nothing unsurmountable. Dealing 792 hp of damage is doable pretty quick. I did give the party a leg up, since they were a little undermanned, and they put it to good use - taking it down in a three rounds. Perhaps the toughest thing it did was a quickened blasphemy each round.
