Attaching a file vs showing a file

So, I was just castigated by Darkness for having a picture up that was disturbing and having it open when I should have had a link to it instead. And that is fine, understandable and was my intention (to have it viewable by choice). My question is,how to do so? I attached a picture as a jpeg and the picture showed up in the post, already open. I was not expecting this as other files I have attached (word documents) were attached as a file and an interested user had to open them specifically. I could not direct people to link since I had scanned the picture in, it is not on the web. So I do not want to offend anyone, but how do I contribute in such a manner?

You could post it as a bitmap. They don't display in vB, AFAIK. Or in a zip file.

You could zip the pic before attaching it; it probably won't show up that way.

Good Ideas, but you over estimate my abilities greatly. How do I zip a file. I have unzipped them before but never zipped them. And Sixchan, the pic is gone for now, if I figure out how to put it up correctly I will let you know.

As for zipping a file, you can usually right click on the file and select 'add to zip'. It isn't that hard from there on in.

Failing that just change the file extension to something non-sensical (or remove it entirely), just make sure to say what it si so people can properly change it back once they download it.
