Attachment suggestion

For some reason, when attaching a file to one's post, .rar files are not a valid option. Is there any particular reason for that, and if not, would it be terribly difficult to allow them? IME, .rar provides slightly superior compression to .zip (a pair of files I just put in a post in General came out to 120K with .rar and 127K with .zip).
