Attack Bonus?

Sorry if this is an old question but does anyone know how attack bonuses work in 4E? I mean what the attack bonus rates of the different classes? I heard somewhere that everyone receives +1 every other level but does that mean their starting bonuses differ?

Far as I can tell from what's been released the progression is 1/2Lvl across all classes. Then weapons add another +2. Some might add +3 or there might be a modifier we haven't ferreted out involved. I think the +2 from a weapon is only for weapons the character is proficient in with all others giving no bonus to Attack rolls.

Some weapons also have a range from +1, +2, +3 these symbolize how accurate the weapon is, generally more accurate weapons do less damage.

A rapier for example, has +3 but does less damage then say a +1 Warhammer.

The formula for attacks is 1d20 + 1/2 level + Ability Mod. If you're attacking with a weapon in which you are proficient you add its proficiency rating (usually +2) and your weapon's enhancement bonus (if any). With powers that have the Implement tag you add the implement's enhancement bonus (if any).

Don't the various classes also get bonuses to attacks (fighter with melee, ranger with ranged, etc)? Or is that only on defenses?

At one time I had assumed so, but the numbers on the pregens don't bear this out, and the rogue writeup lacked any such bonus.

I don't think the various Classes get any other bonuses. At least from what I can remember seeing so far. So:

Ability mod + 1/2 level + Proficiency Bonus = Attack Bonus.

Is there any penalty to using a non-proficient weapon? I don't think there is, but being proficient adds +2 on average with some weapons going higher (Rapier is +3).

Of course, there's still Weapon Focus, Specialization, etc.

Thanks! That seems kind of weird though... I mean that everyone gets the same attack bonuses... But I guess combat ability is no expressed in powers rather than attack bonuses...(?)

Don't forget that wizards spells (and pretty much everything else) are now attacks -it therefore makes sense that a wizard is as good with his attacks as a fighter is with his.
