D&D 5E Attacking a square or a point of place?

Is there a rule for shooting/throwing a weapon into a certain place instead of attacking a creature?

I am wondering If I can cast Light cantrip onto a thrown weapon or an ammunition in advance and then shoot into an appropriate place. As Dancing Lights cantrip needs concentration, this way could be an good alternative to light up some foes at the distance.

I do not know of a rule covering this either. I would give things like a door jamb or table an AC10 while a wall or ceiling would just be automatic or do not roll a 1. You can even just roll a Dex check to hit where you are trying, just go with the Dc suggestions in the book.

Another thought is that the PC can just do it unless trying to hit something more than normal or a creature. I have seen where arrows can be shot at a creature while lit up with light spell.

In my game, unless you're doing something tricky, it would just happen.

I used to have a character that would carry around wet clay just for this reason - take a lump of sticky clay, cast light on it and use a sling to stick a wad of clay to walls. That way I didn't have to worry about arrows embedding in stone walls or accidentally shooting a friendly in the dark.

As long as you area not trying to circumvent hitting an enemy, you should be fine. I wouldn't even require a roll for basic things, while you might need to hit AC10 for hitting a specific spot (like a crack in the wall).

I had a character use Light on a rock, then casually kick the rock down the hallway. He kicked that rock through half the dungeon before he had to use another rock!

I think it depends a lot on what it is you are shooting/throwing and what your intent is for getting it into the general area you want. If we use the example in the OP for throwing an object that has been enchanted with the Light spell into a 5' square or hex area, I am thinking I would call for a dexterity check to actually hit the 5' hex or square area you are aiming for and quite possibly with advantage/disadvantange depending on the distance and how heavy/large the object.

That's reasonable, for the times it actually matters. In the majority of cases, if the rock lands five feet to the left or right of where you aimed it, it's still going to illuminate the area - and out of combat, if it misses, all it's costing you is time. You can cast Light on another rock and lob it after the first one a few seconds later.

You should only call for an ability check if all of the following things are true: It's interesting, the outcome is uncertain, there is a consequence for failure.

The above example fails at least 2 of those, if not all 3.

Love the idea. There is no rule on how to resolve that. It would be DM discretion.
