D&D 5E Attacking a square or a point of place?

You should only call for an ability check if all of the following things are true: It's interesting, the outcome is uncertain, there is a consequence for failure.

The above example fails at least 2 of those, if not all 3.
He's trying to light up foes at a distance that he apparently can only see in dim light or no light. How is that not interesting? How is it a certain outcome, and how is there no consequence for failure?

I wouldn't ask for a roll. You want to cast light on an arrow and shoot it into the ceiling to light up an area?
Done.

Assuming the character isn't actively in combat with those foes at the time, i.e., they're shooting back, I don't think I'd bother with requiring a roll.

One thing to take into consideration is that if you can see the opponents well enough to see that they're there, there's a damn good chance they'll be able to see you clearly as well when you're lit up by the spell during the time it takes to hurl/shoot the object the spell is on...

Attacking a square is uncool. Be a peace with your fellow nerds.
As Dm it would depend on how far you trying to shoot it. Off the cuff AC 5 for the square you trying to hit. On a 1 you hit the nerd orc who was just wanting to eat his moon pie.
