Attacking from a Mount

Given that a mount is Large(Long) and you are presumably sitting somewhere around it middle, wouldn't you need a Reach weapon to attack someone directly in front of your mount (presumably you could still use a sword on a foe to the side of your mount) ?

Yes, as per the PHB, you assume that the character is sitting in the back square that the mount occupies.

Therefore, you need a reach weapon to attack targets directly in front of your mount, but can attack to the sides or behind the mount with a normal weapon.

Of course:

1. A lance makes a very fine reach weapon.

2. It would be pretty hard to attack right over the horses head, so it kind of makes sense. The horse's head would get in the way. This kind sorta simulates that. Well, not really, but close enough.
