Attonment on a Lich?

Ok, so becoming a good/neutral lich is easy, and I have found a way to get around the smell as well.

One of the few things from the (in)famous BoEF that was decent, the shirt of gentle repose. Very nice for a DM actually, especially when you need that zombie or undead of some type to blend in with the average people.

I, too, would say that for a regular, standard lich, atonement involves destroying his phylactery and ending the existence he's not entitled to.

The realms have the Arch-Lich and Baelnorn, two lich-variants that don't have to be evil (Baelnorn is for elves only, I think). You could create your own. An ancient ritual that allowed someone to continue their duties beyond their mortal life-time. Keepers of knowledge or guardian of very important places or items would do it, but it would never be done lightly. It would not exactly be a rosy existance and have many dark aspects.

It would be for a dark hero type, and I think the concept works best if thre's some self-loathing involved. Some WoD-like inner struggle.
