Anyway the
Atypical Street Scene pic from the Savage Species Gallery got me a wondering

Has anyone every had a city inhabited by various monsters going about their daily lives, raisng the kids, painting the house, paying the taxes, planning schemes for world domination?

You know - the kind of city where the corner Grocers is owned and operated by a freindly old mindflayer, where a Beholder police officer flashes you a toothy smile, where little Johnny the Ettin has a Displacerbeast kitten and Medusiae kids go to a School where Home Economics is taught by a Huge Ghoul?

hmmm - coming soon to an PbP near you!

I have used Skaven, Kenku, and Goblinoids in more common areas of society, but I would not do so with most monsters. Especially Illithids.

One of the things that turned me off about Planescape was the "Demons hanging out in bars" aspect.

I don't want to recreate the humanization of monsters in my campeigns.

I sorta dig the "demons in bars", so wise-arse PCs can have their spines snapped in two like so many toothpicks. :D

I really don't think such an idea would fly, though. These critters, culturally, are elitist, fascist, and wouldn't exist too long.

Goblinoids could work this way, only, they'd have to be in very dire straits and would have be held in check by some superior humanistic force.

Of course, I had a race of orc in a very Terry Pratchett inspired game who had gorgeously decorated dungeons, and spoke in Haiku.

So. :D

My desert campaign takes a more neutral view towards many humanoids, so they are a lot more common in cities. Ogres, gnolls, and hobgoblins are hired as shock troops. There is a hobgoblin empire far to the west. Goblins, kobolds and some smaller goblinoid races are used as slaves in the larger cities, or to do jobs humans don't want to do. A select few other monster-types can be found, rarely.
