(AU) Monte, help a brother out!

How much work would it be to make a doc with the SRD spell list outta the 3.5 PHB (arcane & divine, all classes) subdivided into Simple, Complex, and Exotic spells? I know some of it can be intuited (i.e. a 2nd level spell with a 10 minute casting time and an XP cost is probably Exotic) but something official would be great. This way we could port over the AU magic system into our homebrew games and use it with corebook spells.

Not that I don't love the AU spells, but I'm just thinking aloud. I'd love to work the magister and mage blade into my regular games, along with the AU spell system, but with all the core spells plus the AU spells at hand.

ENWorld AU fans, have any of you tried such a conversion?

PS Before anyone says, I'll also check out Monte's boards.

Heck, I'd like to see an AU SRD. BESM d20 may not be a perfect fit for the standard d20 system, but we've got the SRD to play with in addition to the book.

Is it safe assume that this is a "kind request" thread?

Not that Monte Cook is obligated to create an SRD apart from already designating the OGC in the new variant player's handbook, as mandated in the Open Game License. :p

This is a "kind request", but not for an AU SRD. Sorry if I haven't made that clear.

I'm talking about the spells from the 3.5 PHB, the core spells, done AU style at most, or at least just bunched into Simple, Complex, and Exotic by level. Thus one could take the AU spellcasting system and apply it to the old standard spells, like fireball and lightning bolt.

I don't understand why

1) you think Monte even CAN do this (licensing issues).
2) you think Monte would WANT to do this.
and
3) you can't do this yourself.

I understand there is a legitimate group of people that want to merge 3.5 and AU - and though I'm not one of them - but nobody has ever said the answer is to take all the 3.5 spells and put them into simple/complex/exotic categories. Furthermore, it stands to reason that you'd want/need them organized in subclasses according to category - ie., Earth, Positive Energy, Psionic, etc. - and you are talking about one pain is the azz request. I mean, come on. Monte may have admitted that you can merge AU and 3.5, but he's not going to do it for you. Realistically he wants you to toss 3.5 and play AU as is.

Zogg, as long as Monte credits the source(IIRC) then there is no problem.

Go to the AU boards at Monte', there is at least one guy who plans on converting spells and submitting them to the Diamond Throne Fan site. Why don't you co-ordinate your efforts?

1) Monte or anybody else can do so, the srd spells are OGC as are the grimoire/AU spells, only the AU spell names are not.
2) He probably does not want to, he excluded some spells for specific reasons and included others for specific reasons.
3) can't and don't want to personally are different things.

The descriptors would be easy to add but it would take a long time to mechanically do so.

1. As has been said, it's SRD. He could copy it, roll it up, and smoke it if he wanted to, as long as he credits it.

2. Monte's got a great magic system in AU, one that would appeal to a lot of people who are a little burnt out on typical Vancian magic. He just might sell a few books this way, if someone saw how cool it was outside of the AU context. And besides, I didn't say he had to give it away. I, for one, would be willing to pay for a PDF, and I never buy PDFs.

3. Well, sure I could. I could spend a year or two making up my own role-playing rules and use those instead of buying D&D books too. However, something that comes directly from Malhavoc would inspire more confidence in me to use it. I don't really know the formula Monte used to classify the spells the way he did.

You do have a point about the spell descriptors and whatnot. That should be fairly transparent though. I mean, Fireball is a (fire) spell, Earthquake is an (earth) spell, and so on.

Followed ensuing link with bated breath...

And found a topic I started, identical to this one. Crap.

Ah well, at least I was able to read a helpful response or two. Sounds like the conversion notes with the DM Screen will convert a couple of D&D spells, and show how to convert more. Yippee!

I just wish I could get this info without having to buy yet another screen. I've got a formidable stack of never-used screens by now. I should think about recycling them.
