D&D 5E Auras should be automatic

There's something that bothers me in XGTE, that is the new paladin auras. An aura is simply the effect of your presence, nothing else. Just by you being there, it should have a passive effect on your allies or enemies, or both. Because paladins are people who are so full of themselves that they emanate whatever virtue they wish to uphold.

I don't know about you, but an aura requiring a reaction is not an aura! Why bother having a radius of 10 ft when it does nothing at all until you decide it happens? Its just another ability with the word 'aura' in front of it. And what's so magical about taking damage for another guy within 10ft? Even Whitney Houston's bodyguard can do that.

Aura of Conquest doesn't require a reaction, but it has a condition of requiring the creature to be frightened. Also does absolutely nothing if you don't use your Channel Divinity. How can you say it 'emanates a menacing aura' when standing in the radius does nothing to make you frightened until you are actually frightened?
