Austin, TX Game Day

I love the cats at Dragon's Lair. They make the store the only gaming store my wife will let me visit when we're in Austin together.

And I have seen a dog there from time to time. Don't know if it stays there full-time or not.

The Union

Wil,
Since you voiced strong objection to the cats, I checked out the Union at UT for prices. No one answered the phone, but on the website, they have rooms that look appropriate (size, with adequate chairs and tables) ranging from $100-150. This webpage has not been updated in 2 years, so the prices may have changed, and I'm not sure how much time the listed fee buys us. Of course there is some paperwork and if people want to do this, booking (Saturdays are one of the busiest days for events in the Union)

For anyone who's interested, here's the page with the rooms and their prices
http://www.utexas.edu/student/txunion/me/reservations/

The lonestar room or the eastwoods room would be big enough for 2-3 dozen people gaming. Personally, if DL is big enough, free, and provides tables and chairs, I'm game for DL, even with my cat allergy.

Much as I'd like to use DL--I like the cats, durn it!--I'm starting to think it's not the best idea. When I've gone up there on gaming nights, the place usually looks and feels pretty packed, and that's with fewer than two dozen gamers. Given that we're talking about a potentially larger group, for an all-day affair, I'm just not sure it's going to work.

So far our options seem to be a room at UT--which will cost $100-$150 or more, and may force us to push back the date if booking is an issue--or the party room at this apartment complex, which nobody wants to do because it's way out in the middle of nowhere, and because of the $500 deposit.

Anyone got another option? I'm all ears.

I called Dragon's Lair today and they said they can easily accomidate 24-30, but anymore is getting really squished (assuming 6-7 people per table). They provide chairs and table, they open on Sat 10-9, and no one has booked January 24th. They are also across the street from sonic, for lunchers without cars, and 6-8 blocks away are more dining options. And of course the omletry :)

That means we can run 8 games with 6 players each over the course of two sessions, no more than 4 games in any one session. Does anyone foresee Austin Game Day exceeding that size? If so, then DL is out of the question. If not, I think its an ideal arrangement without anyone having to pay to game, plenty of rpgs, games, and comics to browse in down times, and of course, the cats :)

The other approach is the say we *are* doing it at DL and limit the game signups to max numbers Dragon's Lair gave me on the phone.

edit:I almost caused a fiasco. The day hasn't changed, I merely recorded it wrong.

I'm in, assuming we can keep the size down.

In fact, why don't we do this? Everyone who is planning to be there, go ahead and put down your name, and expected numbers. That way, we can find out if we're looking at a size DL can accomodate.

For instance, I'll be there, as will (possibly) my wife, so:

Ari Marmell, 2.

Hey Suzi,

Thanks for following up on this. I have gotten bogged down in real life issues and was unable to get this started. I think this size is fine and MEG will provide prizes, etc for the event as well as be there for certain. I would love to play some games!!!!

I really cannot think of a better location than DL and it would be nice to support them as they support us publishers quite well.

I'll have to wait until tomorrow to speak to the owner and make the official booking, but feel free to chime in with RSVP's and games that you would like to run. Please indicate whether in the morning or the afternoon/evening game, and maybe a little description of the game so people know what they're signing up for.

Once I get the OK from DL tomorrow, I'll start a new thread and move the important info from this thread to a new thread, titled "Austin Game Day January 24, 2004"

Joe and I will be there, but I'm not sure if either of us is running anything. We will bring some copies of MMS:WE to give away, and I know a couple of other publishers already said they would give away some swag.

Wil, I'll bring you extra antihistamines if you want to come. Both joe and i are allergic to cats as well, but it's all in the name of gaming.... The past times we were there, the cat hair didn't get too bad, but we didn't stay in the store for 4 hour stretches.
