What kind of havoc do you think it would wreak on the system if you enected a rule tht said if the DC is lower then the amount of ranks you have in the skill it's an auto success?

Almost none. Why should such a rule change anything, except if you have negative modificators on your skill?

Bear in mind that natural 1s are no auto-failure for skill checks, therefore, if you skill bonus +1 is equal to the DC, then you already have auto-success. Doing this for ranks won't change much, since most DCs are significantly higher than the ranks (they're essentially average bonus +10 for a good challenge), so your rule is mainly a time-saver with almost no consequences.

That was mainly the point. Just a time saver, and it didn't seem like it would cause a problem...

But I like to "dummy-check" any rules I think would be good house rules because sometimes I'm a dummy. ;)

This comes up? That a character has more ranks than the DC but a lower total skill bonus? Even after rolling the die?

...

Wow.

Edit: Oh, right, Climb, Jump and Swim.

Personally, I think you'd be removing the whole point of armor check penalties. If you're going to enact this rule then why not simply delete ACP from the game? Just to punish those well armored types that knew their ACP would prevent them from climbing, jumping or swimming so they invested in other skills? Or is there something I've completely missed.

Fair amount of havoc: tumble in combat.

Once you hit 12th level, you could encumber and armor yourself to the teeth without worrying about ever needing to suffer the massive penalty to your tumble check that you would otherwise receive.

The system already has the take-10 rule, which allows an auto success if your skill mod is DC-10 any any nonstressful situation. Plus, as already noted, the lack of auto success or fail on the skill system means that a skill mod = to the DC-1 is always a success.

The rule you are suggesting would only ever allow characters to avoid their penalties without any real logic behind it.

Except for this line from the tumble skill.

You can’t use this skill if your speed has been reduced by armor, excess equipment, or loot.

Hmm... what Michael Silverbane said, plus: Once they hit these levels, they already fly use obscene magic or whatever, so they are really bent on it, they *will* be able to do it... it's more of a bump for the non-magic shrouded people... as such, I wouldn't mind it that much...

The same basic logic applies.

Swimming like an eel, through a hurricane, while wearing normal full-plate and wielding a tower shield. (-32 to swim.)

Jumping a 40 foot chasm while carrying a maximum load (the one that lets you move 5 feet as a full round action).

Climbing a sheer cliff with a tower shield in one hand.

And how would it work with the opposed skills, such as move silently? The guard has a listen check of 3, so Bob the stealthy (in full plate and with tower shield, -16) automatically succeeds at moving silently due to his five ranks?

I foresee a lot of unintended and illogical results from such a houserule.
