AVATAR: How Good Is It and/or Why Should I Be Watching?

My kids are absolutely getting the boxed set as a Christmas Gift, they love the show. And my thirteen-year-old is on her seventh-belt in Karate and seems to love everything martial-arts and eastern-philosophy related and gives the show high marks for its accuracy.

I've also heard that it grew out of or was inspired by a game of Exalted in a variant setting played by the creators who modified it so that it would 1 work as a T.V. series aimed at kids and 2 was different enough to avoid WW copyright and product identity.

Last episode was solely about Appa. How can you not like a show that has an episode revolving solely about a flying bison with six legs?

I didn't realize that Mako was one of the stars of this show. I love his acting. Spoiler me rotten as to what is good about the show and why I should be watching it.
I hope you used past tense in recognition of his sad demise. :(

I don't know what they're going to do without him. I hope they don't just try to replace him with another voice.

I've fallen behind a bit on the current season, but what I liked about the first season was that they actually took time to develop the characters. They also have an ongoing plot, so it's not just episodic like so many cartoons. And the 'bending' styles are based on real-world martial arts, so they look good.

I like the animation style and character designs, too. It's anime-esque but not too immitative. It has a flavor of its own.

And that is why, Avatar, The Last Airbender. Is such an esteem and worthy show to watch.

-Giving a massive applause to all the warm & loving responses.-

*cries* I miss Mako cause he's soo cool in this show AND in Samurai Jack. :p Now not only no Iroh but no Aku either! :p

Oh well...

But yeah Avatar is the best not well known animated series since...well maybe Samurai Jack but certainly it's way better than some of the crud that's passed through animation in recent years. The story telling, the characters, the world...just wow. My two complains are this: Why doesn't it have a more "grown up feel?!" you know make it more like Batman the Animated Series or JLU/Justice League good. That kind of animation would draw everyone in, I think. In any case that plus it needs to have a book 4. If only because I think it should keep the four elements cycle. Oh well. Book 1 was good but Book 2 definately kicked it up a notch.

Depends on what group of folks you're looking at. I remember reading that A:tLA is Nick's second strongest show in several demographics, particularly the youth brackets, which for them is key (#1 is Spongebob for reasons I can't even begin to fathom). The fact that it has slick animation, fascinating characters both major and minor, plus a coherent, inter-connected story arcs are all bonus points for the adults watching it.

I think the big thing for me that makes S2 have more bite is that we really see Zuko growing as a character; he's no longer the hot-headed bad guy obsessed with capturing the heroes.
