Avians, a winged race

HeirToPendragon

First Post
I have a race in my homebrew campaign known as avians. They are a rare breed of bird-like humanoids known for their great skills in whatever profession they strive towards. In the game, when the PCs do get into fights with them I use manipulations of the harpy and angel templates (depending on level). However I'd like to make them a playable race if my players want. Here is what I have so far, any comments or suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated.

Tactful warriors and skilled masters in most all fighting styles, Avian’s are a race bred to survive. Many myths tell that Avians were the primordial answer to Angels, though most Avian scholars believe these stories came about, and continue to be circulated, due to Avian pride. Many stories also claim that the Raven Queen herself is an avian, though some consider this blasphemous. Play an Avian if you want:

*to take to the skies
*to be a skillful and proud master of a fighting style
*to be a member of a race that favors almost all martial classes

Physical Qualities

Avians combine the features of human and raptor, having the build of a lanky yet stout humanoid but with talon-like feet and a wingspan equal to their height. They come in a variety of colors along the white, brown, and black spectrum, though some younger avians are known to dye their wings in exotic colors. Their heads remain very birdlike, with a sharp beak, piercing eyes, and tufts of feathers that are groomed into different styles. Their feathers cover most of their bodies, though their hands and feet resemble the tough claws of most birds of prey.
When not in battle situations, Avians are known to dress in light clothing such as cloth and silk. A common tradition among many woodland avians is a necklace known as the Connections Pendant. The necklace carries token feathers, normally no more than three, of significant family members, usually the mother, father, and spouse. Many mountain born avians are known to have an heirloom family weapon, normally a longbow, that can be traced back many generations.

Playing an Avian

Avians are a generally rare race that does not commute much with major cities. Those that do are greeted with either much caution or great admiration. It is not uncommon to find an avian being used as a status symbol inside a royal court. Few avians accept such belittling statuses, and those that do often have ulterior motives for doing so, such as training with the royal’s militia.
No matter where their heritage lies, avians are bred to survive anything. Early in age they are taught how to wield all manner of light weapons and how to aim a bow in high winds. Historians aren’t really sure what it is the avians are planning for, and in fact many avians wouldn’t be able to answer that question either.
The few avians who don’t take interest in training the body can often be found training the mind. Avians are known to make excellent scholars and craftsmen due to their attention to detail and constant need to improve. Avians who takes these paths are known to make great linguists, as learning new languages is a difficult task for the beaked race and presents a great challenge for them to overcome.
Avian mages are rare due to lack of available teachers. Those that do take up the arcane arts tend to leave their homes in search for those that can help them continue learning their skill. Those avians that do walk the path of the mystical arts are highly devoted studiers and many refuse to end their training until they’ve designed their own ritual.
The avian clergy holds some power in the avian society, though not nearly as much as it does in other races. Avian clergy tend to practice the teachings of Kord, Ioun or Avandra, blessing the skilled warrior, the talented learner, and the free spirit. Avians born with black feathers are known to worship the Raven Queen, believing their feathers to be a symbol of her divine favor.
Because of the shape of their hands, many of the weapons that avians use need to be custom made in order to retain the same proficiency. Avian armor is crafted to allow for their tail feathers to remain in use, which would otherwise make flight a lot more difficult. They prefer to wear very light armor and use light weapons in order to prevent hindrance during flight. However, there are a few very dedicated warriors known to dress themselves in heavy battle armor.

Avian Characteristics: Prideful, studious, sheltered, reserved, calculating, militant, quick-witted, perfectionist, perceptive

Avian Male Names:
Aleron, Errol, Ephram, Raash, Trent, Vulco

Avian Female Names: Clara, Clymene, Iglenna, Raven, Risa, Valara

Avian Adventurers

Three sample avian adventurers are described below:

Aleron was born in a woodland home constantly threatened by harpies living in the mountains near the coast. His people consider the harpies to be lesser creatures, bastard versions of their form. Since his birth he has trained every day from dusk till dawn’s light in order to perfect his ability with the bow. When he’s not training, Aleron is a known playboy and likes to show off his skills to the avian females, in hopes of one day adding a third feather to his Connections Pendant.

Valara enjoyed wondering off and exploring the deepest tunnels of her mountain home at a very young age. She grew so accustomed to it that her landings are as soft as a whisper, and flight as quiet as a summer breeze. She has mastered the use of a dagger, which gets her out of trouble when she routinely comes in contact with Underdark monsters. She likes to boast that her daggers came from the fangs of a purple dragon, though few actually believe her.

Raven was born in the mountains, but soon learned that training in weaponry simply wasn’t for her. After her mother passed away, Raven left her rocky home and took up residence in a large nearby city. It was there that she learned of her gift for magic and was accepted into the mage’s guild. Though she was very astute and a fast learner, she couldn’t get rid of the nagging feeling that she was only admitted based on the status her being there would provide.

The Homeland Heritage thing will affect later feats unless anyone has other stuff that could be added.[FONT=&quot]

Nope, I don't mind. What parts? Just make sure to note me when you're published ;-)

Balancing so far the major hiccup I'm finding is the Rangers. A level 1 avian ranger can have +1 AC than another ranger of equal stats simply by taking Armor Prof: Chainmail.

Also, when looking at the Drow, they have two racial powers but almost nothing else, so giving the Avians two might be unbalancing.

I'll find out a lot during playtesting.

So... you really like these Avians, huh? If I had to guess, you basically built a race you'd like to play. You can tell in the flavor text. It's a bit much and if it's the outline of handout to the PC than I recommend you tone it down a bit. You make them look like Kryptonians.

For example the line: ''known for their great skills in whatever profession they strive towards.''

Saying they thrive for excellence (similar to the Dragonborn fluff) is more appropriate than basically telling your PC : 'They are great at whatever they do, they rawk that much!'

The current write-up sends a fanboy vibe and players will pick up on it.

Balance wise they look reasonable but there are some oddities

---

The +2 to dex is natural but the +2 to Str is really weird. You are talking about 110 pounds midgets, here. STR normally also involve having some mass to put behind your blows. Even dwarves don't have +2 to STR! Look at the other +2 str race and tell me your avians don't stand out...

If you really want them to be very physical, constitution makes more sense.

But in and of itself, it's not unblanced. It's just weird to consider that in your world, birdmen are as strong as minotaurs.

---

Aerial Weapon Proficiency: You gain proficiency with the longbow.

Err... a six foot long piece of wood doesn't strike me as a great aerial weapon...

I'm trying to picture your raptor-like people drawing longbows larger than they are in flight and I'm giggling.

I don't have a great picture of what they look like; if their arms are their wings, then they shouldn't be getting ANY free ranged weapon proficiencies. If their wings and arms are separate, they should use crossbows (already a simple weapon), seeing as it can be operated in flight.

A longbow just brings silly cartoonish images to mind.

But again, that's not overpowered in itself. Just weird.

---

Two encounter powers is a bit much. Drows have set a precedent but at least in their case you can't use both in the same fight so you should at least do the same.

But IMO you should go with just the aerial charge and drop wing gust. That ability is fun, it's flavorful and it's tactically useful. I'd even improve it a bit. Not much, maybe just the ability to shift away from the target a number of square equal to your DEX after the attack. That would make them great for hit and runs which reinforce their flavor.

On the other hand, Wing Gust is just silly. A close blast 3 produced by a medium humanoid's wingspan? A frigging helicopter blade of that size wouldn't produce wind that powerful! If your avian is flapping his wings that hard, he should fly himself into the nearest wall! At 110 pound it is completely impossible for him to stand in place if he is generating that much energy.

And realism not withstanding, that's justtoo powerful for a racial encounter ability IMO.

---

Hope I didn't sound too harsh. There is good stuff in there and I really like the aerial charge abilities.

But it just seems to me that some elements seem included in the package more because you think it's cool than because it is coherent.

Yeah, I got that fanboy vibe when I was writing it, heh. I'll work on it.

You're right about Con over Str... which sucks because I really want to see more Dex/Str races. Stupid bugbears. But I also don't know if Con works as well. If we're thinking of them as dainty birds, I would imagine Con wouldn't fit much either. Wisdom might work. I could play up the Heritage some more and make it either Con for Mountain or Wis for Forest.

...yeah, you're right about the longbow. Damn. Tactically the race would be known for flying and shooting or perching high than shooting, but I'm sure those wings get in the way in flight fire.

Why does everyone miss the line I put in that only allows one racial power to be used per encounter? It's there just like the drow. But yeah, I've been questioning keeping them having two. I do like your thoughts on improving aerial charge a smidge while dropping wing gust.

I thought about suggesting +2 to WIS instead. It's because of the elves I suggested CON.

Do you use elves in your homebrew campaign? Because if you don't you could have Avians occupy their niche as wilderness masters. You'd see a lot of Avians rangers and laser clerics instead of elves.

With +2 to DEX and +2 to WIS they would also be good choices for tempest fighters. They'd be great rogue too.

Either way, if you go with WIS they will be a popular choice for cleric so you might want to include something about piety in the world of the Avians.

I'm currently thinking of letting the secondary choice be an option depending on the Heritage.

+2 Con for Mountain, +2 Wis for Woodland.

The avians that my characters will be running into more often than not will be the mountain based ones.

The secondary skill bonus might also change to +2 Dungeoneering for Mountain or +2 Nature for Woodland.

The weapon proficiency is also getting moved to Hand Crossbow and Crossbow. Because yeah it makes more sense

As you might see already, I'm molding each heritage around dwarf and elf. If I need to I might split them in a way similar to how the Elves and Eladrin are split

No matter where their heritage lies, avians are bred to survive anything. Early in age they are taught how to wield a crossbow while in flight or high winds. Avians strive for perfection in all things they do, which sometimes makes them hard to work with. Avians of the mountain heritage spend much of their early years training for combat to protect themselves from the threat of the Underdark. Their warriors tend to favor tactical approaches to combat, since the Underdark does not support aerial combat.

The few avians who don’t take interest in training the body can often be found training the mind. Avians living in cities are often scholars and craftsmen. However, because of their desire for perfection, these avians tend to be anti-social and spend most of their days doing work of some sort in order to improve an aspect of themselves. Therefore, even when the avian lives in the city, it is still rare for most to see them.

The avian clergy holds great power in their society. Though the myths that Avians were primordial weapons during the god wars still circulate in avian society, avian clergy tend to practice the teachings of Kord, Ioun or Avandra, blessing the skilled warrior, the talented learner, and the free spirit. Avians born with black feathers are known to worship the Raven Queen, believing their feathers to be a symbol of her divine favor.

Those avians that do walk the path of the mystical arts are very studious and many refuse to end their training until they’ve designed their own ritual. Most avian ritualists tend to stick to study as a means to perfect their art, but some, especially those of woodland heritage, are known to join adventuring parties in order to give their craft for a more practical use.

Clara is an avian cleric of the Raven Queen, the guide of the dead and protector of those long since passed. Clara never took well to weapons training and joined the Lady’s coven early in life. She continuously dyes her wings black in order to show her devotion to the goddess. She hopes to someday leave her forest home and spread her religious teachings across the world, blessing those who earned themselves an honorable death most of all.

I personally think that the Aerial Charge power has too much movement going on in it. In a single move action you move a distance of 8 squares, charge for 8 squares, and then shift for average 3 squares (depending on dex.) which gives you roughly 19 squares of movement. You might want the power to be for them to move up to half their fly speed into the air and the rest to make a charge. This way you could move 3 squares into the air to avoid getting hit, dive for 5 squares, and then shift away.

Just a thought, otherwise it looks interesting.

Oh wow, the aerial charge doesn't say "up to" anywhere does it?. I'll have to change that.

Yeah the fly up is just to allow you to avoid opportunity attacks. There has to be a better way to word it, even if it moves the leaping into the air as souly flavor.

Maybe if I add "you do not trigger opportunity attacks during this charge" it will fix it. I can't imagine anyone ever needing to leap more than 4 squares up.

Also as a side note, I'm considering moving the AC bonus to a feat, because to give that to them naturally is a bit powerful. But if I move that to a feat, they aren't really left with anything special other than the overland flight. I was considering something similar to feystep but there has to be something more original out there.
