AV's thread: Reverse-engineer D20 Modern for D&D?

Anthony Valterra (in this interview ) says he wants to see a thread about D20 Modern and D&D -- specifically if the core rulebook should use up valuable space with information on how to reverse engineer some of the D20 Modern combat rules and other rules to be used in a standard fantasy D&D game to make a D&D variant that's grittier. So... here's the thread. Discuss. :)

Ok, my opinion: I think it would be very interesting to see and try. However, I don't think they'd have to do it in the core book -- they could do it as an article or a series of articles in a magazine (probably Polyhedron).

Would I like to see it? Yes

Would I like to see it in the core book? No

I feel it would work best as a PDF download (even one that was charged for) or as a small staple-bound 32-pager or something. Perhaps this would make for a worthy project for Ken Hood to put together as an EN World publication.

I would not want them to sacrifice any space in a core rulebook for this. There will be new players who only go the "Modern" route. This additional information may be useless for them.

I believe any translation can be done on the web or in the mags. If not I am sure a lot of it will be done right here on these boards.

BTW Eric this was your opportunity for a "yea or nay" poll!:D

PSBTW Doesn't d20 Modern seem like GURPS modular game model?

I would definitely be interested in seeing conversion guidelines, but I also agree that the core book is not the most appropriate place for those rules. Polyhedron, Dragon, or a .PDF from the web site all seem like good ideas. They could write the conversion guide up in its own booklet and have that be the reward for sending in a survey on d20 Modern. That way they get feedback and are able to gauge interest in the idea more scientifically.

Thaumaturge.

I would rather they provide the conversion documents via a Web-Enhancement.

Why?

1) It leaves the space in the d20 Modern book for, well, more d20 Modern stuff!

2) Web-Enhancement means I don't have to try to locate the issue of a magazine to get the conversion, but I'll still have to have the core books (both D&D and d20 Modern).

My opinion?

If they can allocate resources to do such a conversion as a web enhancement, then by all means go ahead. However, I would rather see that space go towards other rule material.

...And I must add in this opinion that the vehicle rules and vehicle combat rules for Star Wars were quite poor and nonconducive to exciting yet strategic use of vehicles. The rules showed to me a lack of playtesting no where near what the core classes and abilities showed. Only in starships of the galaxy did they begin to address the problem.

Any vehicles rules in this d20 modern need to be thoroughly playtested, with emphasis on fun, and on being able to count quickly and easily the effects of the equipment as well as the driver in the rules. Vehicles are so important to a modern d20 game that they could very well make or break the setting.

(I had to say it somewhere...) :o

I agree with the general consensus. I would very much like to see these kinds of rules but feel that they would be inappropriately placed with the D20 Modern rulebook.

I agree with what has already been posted here. I would like to see it, but not if it takes space away from the Modern book. Stick it in the Dungeon/Polyhedron mag.
