Robin Hobb, I believe. They all have names that are "ship of [foo]". Sadly, though I can recomend them mightily for plot ideas, I don't recommend them at all as enjoyable reading. The first book and a half set up enjoyable characters whose lives you are drawn into - then the second book and a half metaphoricly stompped on them in a way that at one point actually made me say "I give up" and just skim the rest to finish up some plot lines.
