Awaken Constructs

How would one go about awakening constructs?
I have a couple of thoughts, but always come up with problems.

What do you mean "awaken" in this case? Do you mean giving it's own ego and mental ability scores? If so, there is a spell called Awaken Construct in Spell Compendium. And it needs a humanoid brain as an component. Guess what is happening. You are creating a Frankenstein's monster.

Ah, I don't have the compendium - so I'll have to wing it.

To tell you what I'm going for is to have an intelligent construct guard the body of an astral traveler. I've been looking at having different spirit entities possess the construct, but if there is a spell that grants intelligence similar to the druidic Awaken spell, then that might be simpler.

The spell is basically like awaken as used on a plant, except it's 9th level, a cleric & Sor/Wiz spell, costs 5k xp instead of 250 xp, and needs a fresh humanoid brain to cast.

As a DM, I always imagined binding an Intelligent weapon to a created Golem to give the weapon a body in which to continue its purpose.

what about warforged? Have you read about ebberon? They do crazy stuff with their warforged. If I remember correctly they also have something called self forged.

There are several other intelligent constructs.

Inevitables are, intelligent constructs from Mechanus, the plane of pure law.

Maug is an intelligent construct race from Acheron.
