Awarding XP for non-game actions

I typically don't, but I did just this week.

I was heading up to the board conference room at our school, where we play, when I saw a Santa sitting in the lobby taking pictures.

When I got up to the room, I jokingly said that I'd give an XP bonus to someone who went and sat on Santa's lap and asked for a "+5 holy avenger longsword."

Jeff actually took me up on it. Now, while most of us are around 20, Jeff is a few years over 35, having just returned to college.

So this middle aged guy goes down and sits in Santa's lap, and boldly asks for a +5 holy avenger longsword. The rest of us, were, of course, laughing heartily at this.

Santa replies, "I'm afraid I don't know what that is."

Having heard his voice, Jeff cringes in terror, realizing that it is his all-too-serious history professor dressed as Santa.

That was worth a few more laughs, as well as some XP.

XP for character backgrounds, and, if I can coach them to start visiting the boards, they get a nice bonus of those wonderfully nifty Hero Points.
