Aximatic Creatures and Epic Weapons

The main problem I see with this is that Planar Familiar is a 3rd level Cleric spell. And you can't even get a cleric to cast it for you, since as has already been mentioned, the spell doesn't work like that.

That is why my 13th level wizard, who is LN and worships Wee-Jas, has never found a use for this spell.

If the target creature is your familiar, it gains energy resistance, fast healing, damage reduction, and additional damage for its smite attack as though its Hit Dice were equal to your character level. Otherwise, use its actual Hit Dice to determine these qualities. If the target creature becomes axiomatic, its linked minds ability applies to you (and only to you).

You cannot cast this spell on another character’s companion creature.

I'm confused! (not hard!)

At least in the Basic books clerics don't have familiars and you can't cast on other peoples familiars, comapnions etc.

The paragraph above definately implies you can cast on creatures not your familiar and it also precludes others familars.

Unless the caster is multiclass Clr/Wis or Soc this spell is useless. Unless it can be cast on non comapnions - which IMO it can and the phrasing above supports it.

I see no reason why it should be wrong for a good cleric to create a bunch of celestial creatires or an evil cleric to make dire creatures.

I do see a problem if the spell allows PC as targets - however as the spell is written I can't see that this is precluded as PC's are creatures.

Now I don't have the book this was taken from so I may be missing something

Cheers

Bob

Spell is best used by Mystic Wandrerer (Magic of Faerun), requires 2nd level divine spells and you gain familiar at second level. Also adepts have familiars.

I've wondered in the past whether it was a typo to restrict the spell to clerics only. Unless it's a way to make multiclassed clerics/wizards seem more appealing! I suppose you could just take one level of cleric instead of five, and then try and cast it from a scroll?

You could also:

Be a cleric with the animal domain and an animal companion. (Legendary Axiomatic Wolf???)
Be a wiz or sorc and use Limited Wish
Have a cleric cast it into a spell storing item for you
Have a cleric custom-make a one-shot wonderous item (an oil perhaps)...this would of course require DM approval.

Honestly, the spell is too low a level and too cheap, especially when considering high HD animal companions. Nasty possibilities.

Nice ideas! Presumably the cleric would have to be of the same alignment as you - you might well have to ask a cleric of your own deity to perform the service. But as you say, the benefits outweigh the costs quite considerably.

The beauty of using limited wish is that you pay a XP cost anyway, so the lower XP cost for casting limited wish is ignored.
