Has anyone ever executed a player's map of the caves? I'd love to be able to show them a map of just the valley and the cave entrances.

I did. I had a pad of graph paper that was a little bigger than 11 x 17, I think. So I drew out the canyon (complete with the contour lines) and cave entrances they could see. As they moved about, I added other cave entrances that became visible to them as well.
We even used it to draw the maps of the interiors as well, so the map became pretty detailed.
That was years ago and the page did not, ultimately, withstand the test of time. But large pads of graph paper have been awesome for me.
