Babylon 5 1st season on DVD....

Good news today for you Babylon 5 fans. News that the series was in production for DVD leaked via the rec.arts.sf.tv.babylon5.moderated newsgroup group, so creator/executive producer J. Michael Straczynski this weekend confirmed that Warner and company are working on the first season of the TV series for DVD release this fall. Here's a quote:

"Season One will be out in a boxed set this Fall, and they're going to be including at minimum two commentaries from me, probably on Signs and Portents and Chrysalis (it's a matter of how much time and energy I can give to it given that there's no fees involved and I'm in the midst of Jeremiah), and if possible, Babylon Squared, maybe Sky Full of Stars. They'd also like to film an on-camera intro by me (but I guess folks will buy it anyway, even with that particular horror included). They're pulling together a lot of stuff on this release so that there are plenty of extras this time around, now that the value of the DVDs has been shown by the first release."

Season 1? Bleh! Season 2-5? Yeah!

Hmmmm....I didn't like B5 when it first started (the pilot turned me off). But I rememeber catching one of the third season eps and I was hooked from then on! Even now, though, I can't stand the first season. I don't like Sinclair, and I just don't think the series found its voice until the 2nd season.

Anyway, I hope the first season DVD does well, so that they feel the need to come out with the rest of the seasons on DVD!

OT: Shouldn't this be in the brand-spanking new Forum designed for this very thing?

Ummmm.....WTF? I posted a reply to this thread from the General Forum, and it posted the reply here, in the correct forum. But there is no "Moved to ..." notice.

Weird/My bad.

Hip! Hip! Hooray!

I'm very glad to see they'll be releasing the seasons on DVD. The first season of B5 will be far more interesting than the first season of ST:TNG, IMO; while B5's first season certainly wasn't as great as the later ones, one can still watch those early episodes and enjoy them for the clues that are being laid for the future. And for watching Garibaldi's hairline receding (he's much more bada** bald, anyway - more points for later seasons).

I recently watched the first season of B5 again. While it is overall weaker than the other seasons, there are a few gems in it: Parliament of Dreams, Mind War, And the Sky Full of Stars, and Signs and Portents, among others. However, I do think seasons 2 and 3 are the best, with brilliant episodes like The Coming of Shadows (Hugo winner!), The Long Twilight Struggle, Comes the Inquisitor, Passing through Gethsemane, Severed Dreams (Hugo winner!) and And the Rock Cried Out No Hiding Place (including the Best Death Scene Ever).

B5 is also notable for having 59 episodes in a row written by the same man (Straczynski) - it would have been 71 if it hadn't been for one episode in the middle of 5th season written by Neil Gaiman.

Gotta add my voice to those looking forward to thise series. It should be really interesting to see if they keep the sci-fi widescreen or go with the standard. Perhaps something with both?

According to JMS, they'll be in widescreen.

As a long time B5 worshipper all I have to say is

THIS ROCKS!!!!!

I have been hoping they would release the series to DVD - and in widescreen too??!! Only bad part is now I have to wait until the fall

Excellent. :)

Now, if only they could start at S4. I need to see the Shadow War again, start to finish. :)

Side question:
Have the rest of you wasted hours and hours at the Lurker's Guide, and the Down Below Sound Archive?
