Bag of Holding Question

Hi

Would people think that a bag of holding could have its capacity exceded and thus burst the bag... or would you just fill it too overflowing and the bag wouldn't fit anymore and thus wouldn;t burst.

Came up tonight... Wizards tried to fill his bag with 40 book... as he crammed them in we worked out that it couldn't fit all of them for size... but was ok for weight

The description of the Bag of Holding says:

If the bag is overloaded, or if sharp objects pierce it (from inside or outside), the bag ruptures and is ruined. All contents are lost forever.

If you think that's too harsh then you could just rule that it "fills up" and he can't cram anything more into it - you could justify it by saying that since it didn't hit the weight limit and just the volume limit it didn't burst, it just "filled up". But that would be if you want to be nice to the player or if the bag bursting and them losing all of the stuff in it would have a negative effect on your campaign. As written, the bag would burst and he'd lose everything in it.

a good rule of thumb is not to stuff your allied archdruid into a bag of holding, even if he is currently a pidgeon. (see suffication after 10 min clause)

Unless you permanaitly want to get rid of said allied archdruid.

I suddenly found out how to get rid of fallen enemies you really don't want coming back :] After all a bag of holding isn't that expensive, and stuffing it with sharp sticks and stones should be simple after putting the body into the (body)bag of holding...

Maybe not killing the enemy but simply putting him into the bag and rutpturing it would be even better. "Lost forever" should not mean "dead" so he could not even get true resurrection ;)

Now you jsut need a reeeaaallly big one and fool a Tarrasque into going inside.

What we are trying to establish (I'm said wizard btw) is, does the volume limit apply to the term overloaded or is that just for the weight limit. Looking at it another way, does the bag seem to fill up as you place things in it, up to its volume limit, and therefore you would never be able to exceed that limit. Or do the items put into the big simply disappear in and the bag never visibly fills and therefore it would be possible to unknowingly exceed that limit

Overloaded means weight or volume.

One thing people tend to forget is that Bags of Holding are fairly fragile. I would never take one on adventures since they are big and bulky as well.

So would you be able to put a ladder in the bag... have the top sticking out and carry it around ??? I wouldn't think so...
