When I played on a MUD as a bard a while ago I'd take songs by Pink Floyd and rework them. I really liked 'High Hopes' and 'A Great Day for Freedom'. Those pull at me.

I'd say that any music that whips ppl into a frenzy is a good example of bardic music. the type of music used would be curlturaly dependant.
here are soem idea's of music fitting to races according to me.

elves: Floggin mollies
Dwaves: Sick of it all(NYC Hardcore)
half orcs: Rage against the machine
Humans: Tekno, metal/Hiphop crosovers
Goblins: Ska (i really see that fitting, for the poster above)
halflings: Sesamy street theme music :p
Gnomes: R&B/soul think Usher
Halfelves: the Ramones

In my last campaign I used songs from the first four Tyrannsaurus Rex albums, many of them used exactly as is. If you had a tape recorder in a fantasy tavern while a couple of half-elf bards were singing/playing... you'd end up with the early Tyrannosaurus Rex stuff.

The campaign had a subplot centred around the search for a legendary bard/sage named Agadinmar. One of the heroes was a young bard and was very interested in finding Agadinmar and/or collecting his tales and songs. They never found him (they backed out of the adventure where he would have been found) but along the way they found lots and lots of his songs, and the songs gave the heroes many clues about the world they were exploring.

Steeleye Span has some nice stuff. They have a 15-minute song about Montrose, who got between the King and the Church and paid the price.

And on one of their later albums is a song about an Elf-Knight who comes to whisk away a human lady and kill her, but she outwits him and gets away. I like that one because she shares a name with my SO. :)

There's another group (I think it's Clannad?) that sings a battle song from Elizabethan-era Ireland, about Firk MacCuil. It's quite the inspiration.
