The first house that I lived in that saw gaming had a huge room over the garage, encompassing the entire span of a large two car garage (when that meant you could put two pickup trucks in it and have room left over, as oppossed to the 'barely enough room for two compacts' I see more and more) and more. I don't think any home built within the last 40 years on flat ground has a basement around here.A friend of mine, though, lived in the hilly section of the city and HE had a basement. Man, did he have a basement! It ran under the entire length of his house. It was three rooms. One room was  pure storage, the small middle one was where all the utility stuff was, then the other side was the gaming room/book room/miniatures storage/magazine storage room.
