Hi,
I started DMing a game with my 10-12 year old kids over the last few weekends using the 5e rules with some adventures of my own making. We've been having a blast so far and I the kids were able to grasp both the mechanics and the idea of roleplaying very quickly.
After thinking about our last session last night, I' wondering if I'm calculating their 'to hits' roles correctly.
For example, one of the players was using the pre-gen Dwarf Fighter character and when he attacked with his battleaxe, I had him calculate his 'to hit' for melee attacks like this:
dice role (1d20) and
+4 (the number listed on the character sheet under Attacks for the Battleaxe) and
+3 (the number listed on the sheet as the modifier for STR 17) and
+1 (proficiency bonus for using a martial weapon)
essentially meaning the Dwarf Fighters 'to hit' with a Battleaxe equaled a dice role +8
Is that the right way to do it?
Perhaps I'm doing something wrong but while we were playing, I was thinking a +8 bonus (or whatever you want to call all the + points added to a role) sounded pretty generous for a 1st level character, but then again I haven't played in 25 years and nothing more recent than AD&D so perhaps things evolved while I was napping...
Thanks for any advice you can give.
FYI, Depending on the answers to this question, I may have another one about calculating the damage role.
