Basic question about ranged attacks

Okay, I dont have my books handy, so thats why I am posting htis question.

1. can a ranged attack be made counting squares diagonally?

2. How do you calculate the range of a target if they are not infront, beside, behind or directly diagonal to the character? In other words, if you cannot simply draw a straight line to the target and just count the amount of squares on that path, how do you calculate the range?

Thanks!

1. Yes.
2. The best way I can explain it is to count squares as if you were moving to the target following the most direct route possible. The distance you count would be your range to the target.

1. Yup.

2. What's the shortest path to the target square? Count just like movement, with each square counting as one square, whether horizontal or diagonal.

X is the target, P is the attacker, X is 3 squares away from P.

Another easy way to think about range is to imagine a square surrounding you. For example, let's say range 5. Count 5 squares in each of the 4 diagonal directions from you, and these will form the corners for the square area of your range.
