D&D 5E Basic Rules Update?

If I recall correctly, the free pdf version of the Basic Rules were released at the same time as the PHB and then the second major update was released at the same time as the MM. Any word about the next update that should (presumably) happen now that the DMG is officially out?

And any guesses as to what content from the DMG will become Basic? (I assume the variants will remain in the book)

Our DM that attended Gamehole Con said that WotC will update the basic rules sometime in January.

Thanks for the info. I wonder why? I can only assume they just want to make sure it's all good and polished as the final major update? I'm guessing they're going to look over everything (PHB, MM, and DMG) and decide what finally should be included in Basic.

Mearls had said that they wanted Basic as lean as possible so they wouldn't include any more classes, but left open the possibility of looking into updating things like backgrounds once the DMG was released.

I have tried to keep updated on what is happening with Basic, but I can't seem to pin down what the final goal or plan is with it. I've heard them say things like wanting to have a 'living' rule set and my assumption is that Basic is going to be their vehicle for that. They've also said that things that are included in adventures, etc could also find their way into the Basic document. (I assume like the Hoard/Tiamat supplements? Although I wonder if they consider 'supplements' to be a part of the Basic Rules?)

My hope is that after this last major update that any extra additions will not be consistently continual. I'm all for them adding stuff to Basic but I hope it comes like a geyser and not like a trickle. I'm thinking a jump from Basic 1.0 to Basic 2.0 rather than Basic 1.2 > 1.3 > 1.4 > etc.

I know that they revised the XP guidelines in the last revision. Can't remember the other changes..if any.

They have always said Basic would be finalized in January. (subject to future revision based on future feedback).

I guess I just assumed they'd release the DMG portion at the same time as the physical book and then would polish it all up. (Kind of like they did with the latest DM version...which is basically a Monster Manual)
