How many movies were there before the first Avenger one?
Iron Man, Thor and some way old Hulk movies.
Two Iron Man movies, actually - the second one introduced Black Widow. And the first Captain America movie came before the Avengers as well. So, two Iron Man movies, one Thor, one Captain America, and one or two Hulk movies (I think only the second one was considered "Marvel Cinematic Universe canonical," but I may be wrong), means either 5 or 6 movies before the Avengers.

Iron Man
Iron Man 2 (also introduced Black Widow)
Thor (also introduced Hawkeye)
Captain America: the First Avenger
The Incredible Hulk

Note that the first "Hulk" is not considered part of the same canon - both "Hulk" and "The Incredible Hulk" cover the origin story.

Conversely, the current DC continuity is thought to start with "Man of Steel". Though I have heard rumour (unconfirmed) that they've decided Affleck's Batman will somehow be an older version of Bale's Batman, making this the fifth film in a sequence starting with "Batman Begins". Personally, I think that would be a big mistake (and, as I said, it was just a rumour - I can't even remember where I heard it), but it's not impossible they'd go that way.

Iron Man (Introduces SHIELD + Nick Fury) (2008)
The Incredible Hulk (Tony Stark Cameo) (2008)
Iron Man 2 (Introduces Black Widow and War Machine, also sets up Thor)(2010)
Thor (Introduces Clint Barton, sets up the conflict in The Avengers, sets up Captain America by introducing the Tesseract) (2011)
Captain America: The First Avenger (Sets up The Avengers, and later events in Captain America: The Winter Soldier) (2011)
Marvel's The Avengers (The culmination of previous FIVE FILMS, Sets Up Marvel Agents of Shield) (2012)

Iron Man 3 (kind of ties up Tony Starks story)(2013)
Thor the Dark World (Frees Thor from being tied to Asgard, sets up the sequel...)(2013)
Captain America: The Winter Soldier (Creates a huge change in the MCU, introduces The Falcon, The Winter Soldier and to an extent Crossbones...)(2014)

I know people have selective memories but the MCU was something that was planned out for quite sometime and if you re-watch the movies in order (as my son and I did right before we went to see The Avengers) all of the connected threads are there. Including little things that a lot of people tend to miss. Like Tony Stark realizing upon seeing the file on the Tesseract that his arc reactor technology is derived from his father trying to replicate the Tesseract energy...

superman has undefined powers originating from nowhere.
on the the hand batman is a realistic figure who inspires us to fight against evil.
Inspite of losing his parents, he become so praise worthy a human being. :)
of course there are more valid points.
