Battleaxe +3 melee (1d8+2/x3)

Some creatures (the Gnoll for instance) have an attack that says they do /x3 damage. I can't find a reference to what the /x3 means. Can anyone enlighten me?

Thanks

its the type of critical
x3 means that you roll to confirm critical hits on a natural 20, and does 3 times normal damage (if confirmed)
19-20 means you critical on a natural 19 or 20, and does 2 times normal damage.

Welcome, the /x3 means that upon confirming a critical hit you multiply the damage by 3.

Strictly speaking, you don't actually multiply anything. You roll the base damage 3 times. Basically the average damage is still the same, but it changes the variability a great deal.

They only list what differs from the standard 20/x2 critical, that's probably why it isn't immediately obvious, since often they leave out either the 20 (as in .../x3) or the x2 (as in .../19-20).
