Battlemages: Any hints?

I'm trying to incorporate battlemages and elementalists from mongoose into my campaign. The problem is that they are VERY powerful. So far, I've made them region specific (they can only be found in the oriental regions [basing this off the Rokugan Campaign Setting]). Any hints or help out there?

Force them to multi-class. One level in any other class per four or five levels in the primary class might be enough.

Multi-classing almost always hurts spellcasters.

Wish I could. the battlemage is a PrC that completely rewrites your spellcasters world view. Plus, you can't touch this PrC until 10th level.
