Battlestar Galactica Returns! Who's excited!?

Not buying it.

We have better phones and computers RIGHT NOW, but we still don't have interstellar flight or space ships.

I'm supposed to believe they have 1980's technology in an interstellar aircraft carrier?

Yes. If it's a good enough show, who cares what kind of phones they use? Can't we just look past the things we don't find "realistic" and just enjoy a show that has great computer graphics, fantastic writing, and keeps people coming back for more week after week? :)

This has been well explained on the show.

The Galactica is an obsolete and outdated ship, it was literally being decommissioned and turned into a museum ship when the Cylon attacks began. It was built during the original Cylon wars, when the Cylons were adept at hacking and using mankinds advanced technlology against it, so for a while human ships were built with intentionally primitive communcations and computer systems that were resistant to Cylon interference.

The Cylons left known space, and had not been seen for decades. The colonial fleet rearmed, and "upgrade" its systems to use more advanced communcations and computer systems, and put faith in their new defensive systems and anti-hacking countermeasures. The Cylons were somewhere distant, also improving their technologies. Thus when they came back they (with Gaius Baltar's help) shut down the control computers of virtually the entire human fleet, leaving ships and fighters helpless as they were picked off. Only the obsolete vipers (newer vipers were wiped out), civilian ships that were away form the colonies and used older technology, and the Galactica survived the attack because they didn't use the advanced technology had older technology designed to be resistant to the Cylons.

Commander Adama is a bit of a luddite, and always stalled the attempts to upgrade Galactica, keeping a large contingent of older-model Vipers and never turning on the more advanced control computers that were installed. Galactica was something of an oddball of the fleet, an eccentric ship that was well past it's prime and was a working example of archaic technology (which is why the ship was being turned into a museum in the original miniseries).

As for it being "1980's" technology, what besides cord phones really seems like that? The phones have cords because it's an awful lot harder to intercept what never goes over the airwaves, and thus it is more secure against the Cylons.

Still betting it will turn into a voyager clone.
How so? Ron D. Moore isn't likely to hire colleague Brannon Braga after his brief employment on the Voyager set.

And Grace Park ("'Boomer' Valeri")? While she's a hot Korean, she's not of the same caliber as Jeri Ryan ("Seven of Nine").

That´s not entirely correct. The older-model Vipers were to be part of the museum. The Galactica was outfitted with Viper MK VII models, but it lost most of them during the initial attack. (At least Lee´s MK VII survived, since he flew a Mark II during the decommissioning ceremony and to guide the Secretary of Education. He used the Viper MK VII in a few episodes, but it was down for repairs another couple of episodes.

The problem with the image enhancing was probably that the Galactica wasn´t equipped with the technology required for it. It probably didn´t have image enhancing software for this task (why should it - it´s a battleship, not a spyplane or scout). I guess a lot of the work of Gaeta was modifying existing image software to be able enhancing such a picture.

Also in defense of the corded phones.
If you ever been in a military comm center you will notice a lot of corded phones still.
Especially on moblie comm centers such as carriers and other ships.
These are hard-wired through out the ship.
Lot harder to intercept/interfere the commands from bridge to other sections that way.

Can you have spoilers from last season....................

Pregger Boomer will join the crew just like 7 of 9 did on voyager. With her help they will be able to fight the borg, cylon what ever. Then the show will just be the Galactica trying to get Earth faster going from one anomolie to the other.

I predict by the end of season 2 Boomer will be on the bridge of Galactica leading a battle against the cyclon.

Don't watch the show and stop raining on the parade. This thread was obviously started as a "get pumped up for the premier" thread and not for arguing why you don't like the show.

Also - it's a television show. I can be entertained without worrying about technological inaccuracies. I watch for cool space-battles, drama, and humor - all of which BSG do quite well (at least, I think so).

Battlestar Galactica! WHOOOO! :D

We will have moved into our new apartment the day before season 2 starts - and you best bet that we will be setting aside our unpacking duties to bask in the sweet, sweet glory that is BSG. (and there will be snacks! mmmmm.... snacks)
