Beach Encounters - What would one find on a beach for random encounters

Courtesy of Steven King, the Dark Tower:

Lobstrosities. Giant lobsters. They come out of the water at night by the thousands, and act with an eerie intelligence. And they chatter amongst themselves.

Dad-a-chik, dad-a-dum.

Chuul's

Does anybody remember the reference to a Chuul on a beach? :)

I am pretty sure it was a Chuul, Eric would know for certain.

How about some old guy with a metal detector looking for lost jewelry? Every time I go to a beach, I see one of these guys.

But seriously, a crazy old wizard with a wand of metal detection looking for some buried treasure said to be guarded by some demon/devil. If the PCs help him, he will cut them in for a share. Or, if they are like my PCs, they can just roll the old man and keep it all.

sand elemental, sand golem, and let's not forget the major annoyance of sand in your armor.

and don't forget nasty tactics, taking the fight into knee deep water can be very bad for some armored folk. and it allows for many a oppotunity for nasty fighting.

or perhaps a wizard with an arcane "metal detector" seeking an old weapon lost to the sands.

Mwah hah hah hah ha.

I've seen bears roaming around on beaches in a lot of nature shows. One in particular was scavenging the body of a dead whale. So if you've got all these other beasties and it's a wilderness area, there is no reason you can't have large land based predators/scavengers (Dire Bear, Dire Wolf, Winter Wolf, Dragon, etc.)

Perhaps a young white dragon has been making a habit of using obscurring myst to crash small fishing vessels on the rocks, eats the bodies and steals anything worth while in the cargo (which would be very little).

The PCs come across a recently crashed ship that appears to have been smashed open from the top. There are a few large reptilian foot prints around...

hideous driftwood sculpture....i mean so lame your eyes water. usually involving gnomes(as subject matter, not the artist) or gulls.
