I live in a place where bears attack people at least a couple of times a year. Everyone has seen a bear up here - I mean, the closest I've personally been to a bear is about three feet away from a Grizzly (it was behind a fence, mind you). and I know others who have been closer.
Long story short, people up here know about bears. And if I had a bear try to hug someone, every single gamer would stand up and shout "bears don't hug!" with viral intensity. Their suspension of disbelief would be shattered instantly.
I can have dragons that breathe fire, and my players won't bat an eye. I can have people survive the explosive impact of a fireball, no problem. Magic spells thrown willy-nilly, extraplanar giant insects with amazing hearing, fine fine fine. But a bear that hugged someone instead of a massive swat that broke bones?
Nope. That would be too much.
My players are weird.
