Beast Master lazy question

One of my players wants to create a beast master Ranger. I'm kinda lazy and out of time to study the class, so I have a very silly question...

Both attack? I mean, Ranger AND companion or the companion only attacks when his master uses a power that does so?

Certian powers let both attack simultaneously(synchronized strike and partnered savaging), but they share the same pool of actions, namely that of the ranger from which the companion pulls and uses actions. Other than moving (specified that they both move with only one move action spent) the PC chooses who uses what action.

To reiterate, the beast companion can only take independent actions if the ranger can't command it either due to restrictions or not being present. While you can command it it uses your actions

The beast shares actions with the ranger.

The beast doesn't get to attack unless the ranger is using a power that says "beast attack" (in which case just the beast attacks) or a power that allows both ranger and beast to attack... anyway, bottom line, it's specified in the powers used.

If the ranger is not using a power that lets the beast attack, then the beast does not attack on it's own.

Edit: ninjaed by a borg!
