I’d much rather increase my wolf’s effective CR with actual scaling HP and damage.

Same principle, but few options. That said I would be fine with ether.

My ranger was based around don't-get-hit-ever, I say was, because I am no longer using that character, but it was still good, eagle harassment for the win apparently.

One of my favorite companions is the baboon because it has hands for all types of fun. In combat pre lvl7 you can have it sling vials of acid, oil, salt alchemists fire etc.
