Being a Judge could potentially disrupt...

I am going to answer this, even though after 6 hours in, I was positively left at the starting block. Boy, do I feel like Walter Mondale against Ronald Reagan in the 1984 election....

Anyway, I would have given up weekends, most nights and kept the research for books in my 2 D&D campaigns "in stasis" while I did the necessary research for this honor.

But it looks like this will never happen. I'm not going to rant about this (BUT I am surprised how I have less votes than last year, and behind someone WHO HAS ONLY TWO POSTS, ONE OF WHICH WAS THE NOMINATION....), but..... :shrugs: whatareyagonnado??

To the winners: Congratulations are in order, I'll know you'll do a great job. I met Dextra and Cthulhu's Librarian at this years GenCon plus many others. I'll see you all there again!!

Other potential judges, what will you be giving up?

Reading, gaming online, and some pet projects around the house.

I read on avg 2 to 3 books per week. I don't hang out online much when I'm home, but now that I bit the bullet and got off dialup I have been more active. And then there are the "honey do" projects at home. Most of which I have been reluctant to do myself. Now I'll have an excuse to get someone else to do them right. Instead of my bungling patch work.

I'll be giving up what little computer gaming time I have nowadays. Watching TV before bed with my wife. I'll probably spend some time during lunch at work reading ENnies material, depending on how much homework I have from my classes in the spring.

When it comes down to near the end, I might put my D&D game on hiatus until the judging is done. They won't like it much 'cause I'm the DM and the host, but hey, I'm contributing to the industry!

well if i could play devil's advocate for second...

does having a thread on what you'll be giving up if selected an Ennies judge sound like good campaign advice???

When you decided to become a candidate I would have guessed you understood the responsibility involved. I could see how this could come across to someone as a "woe is me" pity thread. You guys and gal :) signed up for it. It's hard for me and maybe others to say, "look at Candidate X... that person is giving up this and that... let me go vote for them... what a sacrifice they are making."

Reading the other Ennies judging threads I understand and read how much time is required. But airing what you're giving up just doesn't sit well with this voter. I personally felt this kind of conversation should have been private.

Just curious to see what others would be having problems with. For me, because my girlfriend is in the city, and she gets off latter than I do, once again, I've generally got hours on my time. Probably one of the reasons why I have the highest review count on the boards here. For me, it's not going to be too much of a stretch. For others...

JoeGK quick on the draw...

Yup!

Just saying compared to some, I have a lot of potentially wasted hours anyway. Game in the city... gee... three hours to kill... think I'll read another book and make some notes here.... gee, g/f getting off in four hours... yup, time to break out another book.

of course that may change once my health club membership kicks up a bit. I'm afraid that the lazy gods have had me as their servant for many years in terms of physical activity. Ah, and to think I could once bench 250 with free weights... (those days are long gone...)
