Me and another player are at odds on magical girl/Guy and wanted to ask the community on their thoughts... I believe in what the book says that at lvl 1 ability of servant + 4 is for their mentor creature, my friend claims that if they meant it that way they would've given pet monster... so what are your thoughts on this subject?

You are undoubtedly correct. As noted under Pet Monster, pet monsters have few desires other than fighting for their masters, which does not describe the Magical Girl/mentor relationship.

My mistake, I misunderstood my friend's argument... he was saying not necessarily a small creature, but rather anything like a wolf, Griffin, etc... he can give examples of such from 2 different manga... but the book's description states "with the appearance of a strange little creature" he also believes that as an anime example fate stay night where as Sabre could conceivably be considered the main chara's mentor...
