D&D 4E Best 4E Adventures

Retreater

Legend
I'm looking for some particularly good 4E adventures. I prefer lower level to get the campaign started and the players used to the rules. Can be print or PDF, WotC or 3PP.

I do want something action packed and straight forward. (Something like Zeitgeist is probably too advanced for their style of play.)

I'd recommend The Slaying Stone, one of the WotC modules. It may not be quite what you're looking for; it's about infiltrating a town that's been overrun by goblins, orcs, and kobolds and the like. So there's a focus on stealth in there. But it's well put together, and a very good introduction to the game. There is also a fair bit of combat involved, so that's good too.

All of the (admittedly very few) 4e modules that I have read have been awful. The one I played through was worse.

If you really want to do the system justice, you should homebrew.

Slaying Stone is neat, but I prefer Reavers of Harkenwold from the Dungeon Master's kit. It's got a non-linear structure (with scope to get really open-ended if your players are like that), lots of cool fights, and a fairly classic "Robin Hood" rebellion feel that ends on a really high note. I'd recommend getting Monster Vault: Threats to the Nentir Vale and integrating some that too (as it details additional NPCs from Harkenwold and the Harken Forest that could slot in quite nicely).

If you're looking to use an official setting, I also quite liked the adventure in the back of the Eberron guide.

I'll second the suggestion of Reavers of Harkenwold - my review of it is here. I also have maps and a MapTool campaign file available.

I'm currently running that same group through the adventure from the Monster Vault, Cairn of the Winter King. It's okay so far, but not as good as Reavers. I've only put up the maps so far (though the campaign file is ready - let me know if you need it).

I'm running another group through the War of the Burning Sky campaign saga from EN World, and we're having a good time. That adventure is more about plot and story, so it wouldn't be good for a group that really just likes to bash monsters.

The first adventure of the ZEITGEIST campaign saga from EN World is out now, and it looks fantastic. I've played in in a plot playtest but haven't been through it with the combats and everything in detail yet. From a read-through, though, it's really good. As with War of the Burning Sky, it's more for groups that are really interested in plot and background and story; not a ton of combat.
