Best alternative Epic spellcasting system???

First Post
Okay, so I really don't like the spell system given in the Epic handbook. Unfortunately, I'm not sure what to do since the PC's in my campaign are around 17th level and I'm going to need a solution soon.

So I have come here to ask the big brains on ENworld what they have done or heard of to solve this problem. Any comments, ideas, or discussion will be greatly appreciated.

... What sort of thing are you looking for? You could just have higher level spells and, basically, convert from the Epic Spell system to higher level slots. Say, take the Epic spell's spellcraft DC, divide by... 5, round down, that's the spell level. Of course, this doesn't make sense in reverse.

Or something.

APG does have class options for the core classes till 309th level. The spellcasters get slots for some higher spells but these seem to be for meta magic, it really isn't discussed in the text.

APM doesn't have anything for above 20th level.

I have an Epic Spellcasting variant in this thread.

I have an updated version which will be published (much more meat to it). I'm getting ready for playtesting, so keep an eye out for a post in the Open Calls forum in the next couple of days.

Thanks for the suggestions so far. Andorgar, your thread is the best alternative system I've seen so far. I only wish my PC's were high enough level to help playtest it some. I'll keep looking of course, but unless I find something better consider your system procured for now. I look forward to a more meaty published version as well...

I can give you a hint for the only change in the system: when you use metamagic feats as a basis for converting spells, there is no 25% premium. The original intent was to not diminish the "value" of feats that a character may want to take.

We have found during our own games that since this is just part of the creation process, it has nothing to do with a particular character's feats. It had no impact, was not overpowered, and it was too complicated for no purpose.

So the formula to convert is just base spell level + metamagic feat effects + modifications. Simple, and effective. :)

The published version will have 30+ modifications, more options, game notes, and 270+ converted spells to avoid all that work. :D
