D&D 5E Best Class and Why???

My all-time favorite is rogue/thief. It's been my favorite since at least 2E (if not BECMI). I've always been a gadget lover, and always loved the thief's skills for traps and locks, while still being able to fight decently.

Any class/subclass that doesn't have "magic" or "mystical" things as the way it solves its problems.

So that makes the list for standard PHB:

Fighter/Champion
Fighter/Battle Master
Rogue/Thief
Rogue/Assassin
Barbarian/Berserker

From SCAG I really like the Swashbuckler.

From UA I like the Scout Fighter and non-spellcasting Ranger. I haven't really looked closely enough at some of the other Fighter archetypes.

My favorite PC I've played so far has been a Battlemaster/Swashbuckler with the Shieldmaster and Sentinel feat. I don't know if it's powerful but it's really fun.

3.5 Cleric, Choosing two domains and all the options available really felt like you could create a unique persona that was also flavored their mechanical abilities. Also you know.. you got decent BAB, lots of spells, heavy armor.. uhh honestly they were probably a bit much.

I like a lot. Warlock has the most customization by choosing both the pact, and the patron separately. Monk is really fun in this edition, Wizard is great, Cleric too, but I really have two standouts.

Paladin is a really well designed class. It bolsters allays with Auras, and lays infidels low with smites. All around it just works really well.

There other stand out is my top favorite. Barbarian. It's just designed to do it's job well. Deal damage and take damage. The combination of rage and Reckless attack just combine so well it's really a pretty elegant design (ironic for the Barbarian, I know). What I would really love is a subclass that really builds upon these too features as they are the core of the class to me.

For me personally, it's the paladin. I like to be in the thick of things, where the action is. I also like having a lot to do or contribute. I tend to prefer warrior types. So the paladin is right up my alley. With the paladin, you can be durable and dangerous. You can fight, defend, and cast some pretty useful spells. With the mix of combat abilities, healing, defensive boosts, spells, and access to social skills, you can contribute to every pillar of the game. You're never without something to do. I can slay monsters all day and keep the party safe and sound. Plus some of the paladin spells have great utility, like Find Steed. So it's really the class that can do everything I want.

A Monk has a simple, easy-to-understand solution to all problems. His fist.
For whatever reason, anything that uses Ki, 5e defines as explicitly magical.

Is it a little weird/ironic/counter-intuitive that the game's 'martial artist' isn't exactly martial? Yeah. It's not like it's the only thing.
